James Stanley Sams, Sr. was born November 1, 1926 in Hesper, Iowa to Rev. Joseph R Sams and Loreta Stanley Sams. He died April 7, 2019 at Crandall Medical Center in Sebring, OH. He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Irene Safkow Sams of Sebring, OH and sister, Eunice Sams Close of Crandall Medical Center in Sebring, OH. He is also survived by his children, James Sams, Jr. (Susan) of Myrtle Beach, SC, Janice Street (Ted), of Louisville, OH, Beverly Blasiman (Douglas) of Hudson, MI, grandchildren Brian Sams (Danielle) of North Andover, MA, Allison DeVaux (Scott) of Myrtle Beach, SC, Timothy Sams (Maria) of Clermont, FL, Michelle Olsgard (Christopher) of Columbus, OH, Jacqueline Dees (Jonathan) of Columbus, OH, Eric Blasiman (Brittany) of Haskins, OH, Craig Blasiman (Faith) of Farmington Hills, MI, Corey Street (Monica) of Louisville, OH, and Katelyn Irene Street of Columbus, OH, as well as 11 great-grandchildren. Stanley was preceded in death by his parents as well as his siblings A Robert Sams, G Paul Sams, J Donald Sams, Lois Sams Cattell, and daughter-in-law Linda Miller Sams.
Stanley Sams was a quality, custom home builder and the owner of Sams Construction Company, retiring in 1991. Other employment included Beloit Flour and Mill Company and Babcock & Wilcox. After retirement, he worked on over 75 mission trips with Friends Disaster Service, Habitat for Humanity, and others in Mexico, Honduras, Brazil, Ethiopia, India, and Thailand as well as 17 of the United States. He and Irene faithfully served on the Board of Trustees for Beaver Creek Presbyterian Church Camp. Mr. Sams was a member of the Sebring Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder, Sunday school teacher, youth leader, and choir member. He served in the U.S. Army of Occupation at the end of World War II.
He will be fondly remembered by all for his ‘life tools’: Dependability. Faith in God. Dedication. Stability. Fairness. Pride.
Visitation for Stanley will be held at Sebring Presbyterian Church in Sebring, OH on Friday, April 12th from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. with the Funeral Service immediately following. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sebring Presbyterian Church, Beaver Creek Presbyterian Church Camp, or the Ethiopia Education Endowment Fund, all in care of Sebring Presbyterian Church, 525 N. 16th Street, Sebring, OH 44672.
