James "Jim" Ludwig Obituary

James David “Jim” Ludwig, 77, of Louisville, Ohio, passed away peacefully into the arms of his loving Savior on September 23, 2025, at Aultman’s Compassionate Care Center after a brief battle with cancer.

Born on March 4, 1948, in Erie, Pennsylvania, Jim was the son of John A. and Clara (Bender) Ludwig. He graduated from Academy High School in 1966 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in biological science from Edinboro State College, graduating cum laude in 1970. He later earned a master’s degree in botanical science from the University of Michigan and pursued additional graduate studies at Penn State University. His lifelong love of science and learning influenced both his career and his hobbies.

Jim dedicated more than 35 years to Ohio Power (now AEP Ohio), working in environmental affairs and management. Later, he served as the activities director for the Ohio Power retirees, organizing luncheons and enjoying time with former colleagues. He was known for his work ethic, his quick wit, and his ability to strike up a conversation about nearly any topic with anyone (at any time).

Family was central to Jim’s life. He married the love of his life, Shirley Ann (Teeters), on April 24, 1987. Together they raised two sons, Michael and David, later welcoming two beloved grandchildren, Madelyn and Colton. Jim loved working alongside his sons on projects big and small—from roofing and remodeling, to building houses and helping with school assignments. He taught them practical skills and the value of diligence. Even at a young age, he encouraged Michael and David to learn and explore—renovating their basement and attic in middle school, reroofing the house while in elementary school, and gifting each son a new power tool every Christmas to build their collection and skill set.

Jim was equally dedicated to nurturing their intellectual growth. He eagerly supported science fair projects and advocated for advanced classes to ensure his sons could succeed academically. In the early 1990s, he would lead elementary-aged tours through Mount Union’s Brumbaugh Nature Center, sharing his knowledge of local plants and wildlife. Though he only achieved the rank of cub scout himself as a child, he ensured both Michael and David became Eagle Scouts, camping, teaching and learning alongside them.

When his job relocated him two hours away during the week, Jim made it a priority to be home for his family. He rarely missed baseball and basketball games, wrestling matches, awards ceremonies, track meets or band concerts. His sons and grandchildren could always count on his presence, a testament to his steadfast commitment as a father and grandfather.

Jim’s talents and interests were wide-ranging. He could identify nearly any local tree, flower or insect by its scientific name—often whether you wanted him to or not—and was an avid history buff. He became an OSU-certified Master Gardener in 2016 and loved tending his garden and backyard orchard, sharing the harvest with family and friends. He also had a gift for woodworking, crafting cutting boards from exotic woods, turning segmented bowls on his lathe and designing custom gifts that he joyfully sent to loved ones near and far.

Though he was always busy with a project, Jim treasured the activities that connected him with others. He loved fishing with friends on Lake Erie, enjoying ginormous cones from local ice cream shops, and playing cards with Shirley and their friends. A lifelong sports fan, he cheered from the sidelines at countless local events. He was a devoted Louisville Leopards supporter, Cleveland Indians fan and a lifelong Michigan Wolverine—especially when it gave him the chance to tease his Buckeye friends.

Faith was a grounding part of Jim’s life. He grew up in the Lutheran church and later attended First Brethren Church (now Beacon of Hope Community Church) in Louisville for more than 30 years before joining Grace Brethren Church in Canton. He lent his voice to the choir, tended flower beds and built projects that continue to bless others. His was a quiet, steady faith, lived out through service and dedication.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, John and Clara Ludwig. He is survived by his wife Shirley; his sons, Michael (Amy) Ludwig and David (Jaclyn) Ludwig; his grandchildren, Madelyn and Colton Ludwig; his older brother, John (Pam) Ludwig; and his niece, Ann (Arthur) Graham.

He will be remembered as a devoted father and grandfather, a loving husband and a man who could always be counted on to show up and lend a hand. His legacy lives on not only in the family he raised, but also in the countless projects, stories and memories that continue to shape those who knew him.

Calling hours will be held Monday, September 29, from 5–7 p.m. at the Stier-Israel Funeral Home at 917 East Main Street in Louisville, Ohio.
