Lucille Schmucker, 96, of Hesston, KS died May 1, 2020. She was born March 4, 1924 to the late John and Bertha Sommers in Louisville, OH. She is preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, a son, Ronald, three sister: Maxine Martin Brooks, Mildred Schmucker, Arline Schmucker, and a brother, Earl Sommers.
On February 20, 1945, Lucille married her high school sweetheart, Leonard Schmucker. They were married 64 years. They had six children—three girls and three boys. Leonard and Lucille pastored two churches in Manistique and Imlay City, Michigan. Lucille became a nurse aide after the children were in school and she worked in a local hospital. This work was very rewarding for her.
In 1975, the family moved to Hesston, KS for additional schooling and Lucille continued her Nurse Aide work in a local hospital and then at Schowalter Villa Nursing Center until her retirement in 1989. She was a member of Hesston Mennonite Church. During retirement they moved to their home community of Louisville, OH to be close to relatives. After her husband’s death, Lucille returned to Hesston, KS to live at Schowalter Villa. Lucille enjoyed quilting, was a wonderful baker and cook, and opened her home for others in need. Survivors include: five children: Lillian and Michael Badrak of Jackson, MI; Marvin and Lee Schmucker of Wichita, KS; Myrna Roiser of Rochester Hills, MI; Carol and Dave Fite of Quarryville, PA; Darrel and DeeAnn Schmucker of Sacramento, CA; two sisters, Lavera Helmuth and Gladys Gingerich; three brothers, Owen Sommers, Elvin Sommers, and Merle Sommers; daughter-in-law Lisa Schmucker of DeSoto, KS; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Lucille will be laid to rest, beside her husband Leonard, in Beech Mennonite Church Cemetery, Louisville, OH. A virtual memorial service for immediate family will be held on Sunday, May 10. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.stierisraelfuneralhome.com
