Son of Russell William Groves and Dora Mae Stryker

Survived by: Phyllis Miller Groves, wife of 68 yrs.; Son: Keneth & Ruby Groves, 4 grandchildren: Amanda & Juan Poje; Megan & Alan Ramsey; Russell W. Groves IV; Ana Groves: and 11 great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his son Russell W. Groves III, sisters Louise Slayman and Thelma Smith.

Russell accepted Jesus as his Saviour in 1959 and joined Canton Baptist Temple 1961. He enjoyed serving the Lord as deacon, Bible teacher, bus captain and driver. Served with missionaries in: Gospel Time Youth Camp, Mt. Powell Navajo Mission, Drango Mexico, Martinique. He loved the Word of God and he read the Bible out loud daily. Rev 1:3 Blessed is he that readeth. Rev 10:17 Faith cometh by reading. He was a marvelous husband and father. He was an honest, hard worker, good provider, and he took time to listen and be present for those he loved.

He joined the US Navy Reserves in 1953 and went active duty 1955 boarding the USS Vulcan and then the USS Wyandot AKA 92.

In 1954-55 aboard the USS Wyandot, “Operation Deep Freeze,” with Admiral Richard Byard. He went to Antarctica for 72 days where they set up a Naval Base. Sailing around Cape Hore, SA , crossing thru Panama Canal, New Zealand, Christ Church, McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, Scott Island, Uruguay, Montevideo, Rio De Janeiro. On the USS Vulcan he traveled to France, Spain, Italy, Cuba.

Funeral services will be held at Canton Baptist Temple on Wednesday, December 11th at 11AM with one hour of visitation beforehand. Officiating will be Pastor Jake Tovissi and Pastor Mike Frazier. Russell will be laid to rest in Sunset Hills Burial Park, Canton, OH.
